Richie Havens, from Woodstock to La Villette

About a week ago, as I was going down the stairs to the Metro station on my way to work, I ran upon a billboard, at the foot of the steps: “Hey I know this face, this guy is a singer-guitarist, a real artist!”. I indeed recognized Richie Havens, he was at Woodstock 40 years back! I remember the year, 1971. I was still a student then, and living in a big town in South Vietnam. Together with some friends, we went to the movie theatre to watch the premiere of the movie Woodstock. In the days that followed, I went again and again to watch this movie. Sometimes three times in a row! I was so impressed by it. Especially, I was touched by Richie Havens’ performance as he was singing “Freedom”. It had been programmed as the opening act to the festival. That’s probably what impressed us most. I didn’t know who he was, but the guy was so imposing. He was wearing a huge dark yellow robe. Seeing the rings on his fingers…that view was fascinating. That was a typical hippy attire, only, at the time, we had never seen anything like that! We gave him a nickname. For us he was gonna be the “Cambodian Monk”. He sang “Freedom” at the tune of his acoustic guitar as he was tapping rhythmically and enthusiastically along the way. 40 years have gone by, and now I see him pictured on this billboard. He’s going to be performing here at the Cité de ..la Musique.. on December 5, 2009, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. Gee, that’s today! A living legend is coming to town! As I’m on my way to work, my mind wanders 40 years back in time and to the nice memories of times bygone. Back in the seventies, we sure were fascinated by everything hippy, we loved the music that came with it: The Beatles, Santana, Ten Year After and Alvin Lee. They were all young and beautiful. There are no words to express how much we had been impressed when we went to the movies to see Richie Havens in Woodstock.

Richie Havens (born January 21, 1941 in Brooklyn) is an American singer guitarist. His voice his very recognizable among the whole pop music repertoire. His singing is strong, impetuous and thoughtful. His style is unique and universal. For more than three decades, his music conveys a message of freedom and brotherhood throughout the world. He has authored over 25 albums and performed live all over the world. He is a self-proclaimed singer with a message. That is his calling, his responsibility. To me, he is the source of many memories, which today still nurture my life. I think of my long gone friend: Le Cong Huong, who died towards the end of the Vietnam War, back in 1975. I think of Nguyen Dinh Nguyen who thankfully is among us, and I think of Ha Tien, for whom no one knows what the future will bring....In any event, seeing Richie Havens on the wall of the metro this morning has brought me so much joy. He’s come a long way from Woodstock to La Villette.
